Our Story
In 2020, whilst working on a construction site our director, Jamie Tong, witnessed a utility accident resulting in a colleague being severely injured. A utility accident is defined as accidental contact with underground pipes and cables.
So shocked by this incident, Jamie took the opportunity to conduct an industry assessment. This research paper was sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Building and the Worshipful Company of Constructors. The aim of this research was to analyse the causes and implications of utility accidents. The results were shocking.
The research concluded that on the market there is no product capable of both detecting and avoiding utilities. With 84% of utility drawings being inaccurately plotted, and current technology lacking the accuracy needed, it is not surprising that 60,000 utility accidents occur every year.
Excavation methods are outdated and Scannetix was developed with the sole intention of modernising this sector, strengthening infrastructure resilience.

Jamie Tong
Utility Avoidance Specialist
My name is Jamie Tong and I am the founder of Scannetix. Before launching the business I worked in the construction industry for 10 years in project management delivering high valued projects.
However, after witnessing a harrowing utility strike and carrying out the research paper, I knew more needed to be done to protect those working in construction. I have now dedicated over three years to making construction sites safer, protecting businesses, personnel and the community from the vast implications of utility accidents.
Recently I have been awarded the Journeyman Constructor Award presented by the Lord Mayor of London.
Around this, I volunteer with the YAAN, M3 Enterprise and Founders 4 Schools to promote apprenticeships and entrepreneurship as alternative routes for young students.
